This article extends and expands a nuanced unpacking of conceptualisations critical global citizenship education (GCE) in typologies GCE (Pashby, K., M. da Costa, S. Stein, V. Andreotti. [2020]. “A meta-review education.” Comparative Education 56 (2): 144–164.). It finds approaches to can be described broad terms that conflate quite distinct agendas; critiqued as unpragmatic, idealistic, morally-relativistic; fail engage substantively with their complicity within the systems they seek transform. then explores what selection empirical research on secondary schools ‘global North’ contexts draws analyses contributes illustrating possibilities tensions practice.
